Thailand Guides - Trat![]() The sleepy south-eastern province of Trat shares its eastern border with Cambodia and is a major centre for gem traders. For visitors, however, the provincial capital is of little interest beyond being a ferry point to Koh Chang and other islands along the coast. OverviewThe gem mining and trading province of Trat is pushed up against the Cambodian border 400 kilometres south of Bangkok. At several points along the border markets conduct a lively trade in legitimate and contraband goods. Although the provincial capital itself has little to offer in the way of entertainment it is a nice enough town with a wealth of good markets. Activities and eventsThe Trat coastline and neighbouring islands are superb for all manner of water sports, including fishing, wind surfing and scuba diving. Koh Chang Naval Battle Day, held in late January, commemorates the battle against French naval forces. Merit-making rites are performed and an exhibition is held by the Thai Royal Navy. The Trat Fruit Fair is held annually in late May or early June and features exhibitions and the sale of local produce. Time to visitTrat and the surrounding islands can be visited all year round but the most popular time to go is during the cool season, from November until February. During the rainy season the islands are much quieter but can be subject to frequent storms and the water conditions are less favourable. |
