Thailand Guides - South
ChumphonSituated 463 kilometres south of Bangkok, Chumphon is considered the gateway to southern Thailand. The city is accessibly by road and railways. Often overlooked by tourists, it has indeed a variety of natural attributes ranging from high mountain ranges, mangrove forests, offshore islands and fertile coral reefs. Koh Pha-NganKoh Pha-Ngan lies 20 kilometres to the north of Koh Samui. The island has become a popular escape for those who find its larger neighbour too developed. Koh Pa-Ngan is certainly less crowded and has beautiful beaches and an abundance of coral in the crystal clear waters. Koh SamuiBeaches on SamuiOf all of Koh Samui's beaches, Chaweng Beach gets top votes among tourists for its length and beauty, with many places to swim, sunbathe and enjoy various water sports, or stop by the shopping markets, bars and restaurants. KrabiKrabi is the transport hub for the islands of Koh Phi Phi and Ko Lanta. It is 65 km northeast of Phuket and is beginning to accommodate more visitors each year. Nakhon Si ThammaratLocated on the shore facing the Gulf of Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat sits on the highest elevation of southern Thailand. The terrain is rugged with forested mountains, mostly in the Khao Luang national park. Thus, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure trips. PattaniThe former Portuguese trading post of Pattani is an interesting coastal town in one of Thailand's southern-most provinces. With a predominately Thai-Muslim population the area has a unique character and fee and some wonderful deserted beaches. Phang-NgaPhang-nga Province is blessed with turquoise waters and striking rock formations. As the location of the famous James Bond Island it is also one of the most recognisable destinations in the world. PhattalungThe lush and mountainous southern province of Phattalung and its small capital are located over 800 kilometres from Bangkok. PhuketThailand's largest and most famous island, Phuket sits on the Andaman Sea 862 kilometres south of Bangkok. The island, which has greeted millions of tourists from all over the world, is famous for numerous coves of white sand beaches and hospitable islanders. Phi Phi IslandThe islands of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lek offer visitors wonderful opportunities for climbing, caving, kayaking and scuba diving in an area of outstanding natural beauty. RanongDespite being a small province, Ranong is abundant with natural attractions; the sea, islands, mountains, forests, waterfalls, mangroves forests. Yet, it is barely known among overseas tourists. This lush and rainy province bordering southern Myanmar, Ranong has among its attractions hot springs and stunning marine parkland. Indeed, this province offers a lot more than just another coastal province. SatunSatun is a small but attractive province, also the southernmost province of Thailand on the west coast bordering Malaysia. Like the neighbouring province of Krabi, Satun is a truly explorer's wonderland. SongkhlaSongkhla earns a reputation as the transportation hub of the southern end of Thailand. The province has its frontier with Malaysia. One of its districts Hat Yai has been a popular weekend getaway of Malaysian and Singaporean tourists for decades. Surat ThaniThe southern commercial centre of Surat Thani offers little for the casual visitor but it is only a short journey by ferry to the beautiful islands of Koh Samui and Koh Pa-Ngan. TrangThe charming land, lying humbly on the coastal line of the Indian Ocean, is considered as the hidden treasure of natural paradise in Thailand. |
