Thailand Guides - Sisaket

Noted for its numerous Khmer- style religious temples scattered all over the province.
Sisaket is one of the most well-known destinations in northeastern Thailand, with its location about 571 kilometers from Bangkok. The province is located in the valley of the Mun river, a tributary of the Mekong. It borders with Ubon Ratchathani in the east, and to the south of the province is the Dongrek mountain chain, which also forms the boundary to Cambodia.

Overview

Sisaket was originally called Muang Khu Khan. Archaeologists believe the city dates back to the time of the Khmer empire because of the presence of many Khmer ruins. Legend has it that the town was upgraded to a city in 1759 when Ayutthaya was Thailand's capital. Khu Khan was relocated to Muang Sisaket but the city still retained the name of Khu Khan until 1938 when it was renamed Sisaket Province.

Attraction

Somdet Phra Sri Nakarindra Park, in the Sisaket Agricultural College about 2 km. from the provincial hall, the park was built to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of H.R.H. the Princess Mother. This is a natural forest area and also the only forest in Thailand that has a dense concentration of Lamduan flowers, regarded as the provincial flower of Sisaket.

Khao Pra Wihan National Park is located in Khao Pra Wihan conservation forest. With its total area of 130 Km/2 and 200-500 meters high from sea level, the park covers both Srisaket and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. It has a huge historical castle by the same name Prasat Khao Pra Wihan. Pha Mo Ee Dang is also a place close to a stairway leads to Khao Pra Wihan where there is viewpoint from which to admire the Cambodia (Khmer) panoramic landscape and the castle itself.
