Thailand Guides - Satun![]() Satun is a small but attractive province, also the southernmost province of Thailand on the west coast bordering Malaysia. Like the neighbouring province of Krabi, Satun is a truly explorer's wonderland. OverviewSatun is located 973 kilometres from Bangkok and occupies an area of 2,478 square kilometres. The mainland's shoreline extends 144.80 kilometres in length. This province is surrounded by Songkhla and Trang as well as the Malaysian state of Perlis. Most of the area in Satun is mountainous, full of forest, wildlife, colourful corals and beaches. Having the basin along the coast facing the Andaman Sea, there are more than 100 offshore islands. AttractionsThere are two major island groups in this national park, Tarutao National Park and Adang-Ravi archipelago. The former is the first marine park of Thailand. It was proclaimed a National Park on 19 April 1974 and declared by UNESCO as an ASEAN Heritage Park and Reserve in 1982. Seven large islands are Koh Tarutao, the biggest island in the park teeming with verdant forests and white sandy beaches; Koh Adang, among the various islands in the Straits of Malacca, it is the most enchanting, Koh Rawi, Koh Li Peh, Koh Klang, Koh Ba Tuang, and Koh Bit Si. Camping is not allowed on this island but swimming can be done. Within the small Adang-Ravi archipelago, there are several pretty isles such as Koh Leepeh, Koh Adang, Koh Ravi, Koh Dong and Koh Khai. On Koh Khai, approximately 40 minutes from Koh Tarutao, visitors can visit the natural rock arch, the symbol of Tarutao national park. However, overnight stays are not permitted on this island since it a major nesting site for endangered sea turtles. Bueng Thale Ban (Thale Ban Swamp) is a large fresh water area originated from a land depression between Khao Chin and Khao Mot Daeng.
