Thailand Guides - Saraburi![]() The town of Saraburi acts as a gateway to the northeast of Thailand. Although there is little to hold visitors in the town for very long, it is worth a pit-stop for a little respite on route to Issan. OverviewSaraburi Province lies to the east of the Chao Praya River, 108 kilometres from Bangkok and consists mainly of flat plains and plateaus. Although the area has a rich history, today the provincial capital is little more than a busy industrial centre. However, the area is home to two national parks and some beautiful temples. AttractionsWat Phra Buddhabat is located 28 kilometres north of Saraburi town and is one of only six royal temples in the country to be given the highest rank of Ratchavoramahavihan. The temple, which is considered one of the most beautiful religious sites in Thailand, houses the footprint of Buddha. The massive footprint displays 108 auspicious marks. A beautiful mondop or square shrine with a seven-level roof covers the precious religious relic. Pearl inlay on the mondop displays some of the finest craftsmanship of its kind. The temple pays host to a colourful fair held in February and March and a merit-making ceremony during the rainy season retreat. Halfway between Saraburi and Pak Chong is Muak Lek Food Market, an excellent place to sample a range of local delights such as curry puffs, sweet meats and fresh traditional desserts. Close to the market is Muak Lek Arboretum, a pleasant shaded area where visitors can enjoy a swim in a nearby stream. Nine kilometers from the arboretum, the waterfall Namtok Chet Sao Noi also offers a scenic spot to take a dip. Page: 1 2
