Thailand Guides - Samut Songkhram![]() Samut Songkhram is just 72 kilometres from Bangkok making it an excellent destination for a one day excursion from Bangkok. OverviewSamut Songkhram is Thailand’s smallest province, covering just of 416 square kilometres. The province is well irrigated and as a result intensely agricultural. The area is renowned for coconut palms, guava, lychees and in recent years, grapes and a vineyard producing excellent wine. Salt is also processed in a series of man-made lakes. With more than 300 canals and rivers it is possible to take trips into rural villages and witness the more traditional way of life practiced by farmers and fishermen. The main agricultural products processed in the province are palm sugar, palm juice and carved coconut shells for the Saw, a traditional Thai string instrument. There are also several orchid farms in the area. AttractionsAmphawa District holds an important place in Thai history and dates back to the Ayutthaya period. Originally called Kwaeng Bang Chang, the small community here prospered from trade and agriculture. The King Rama II Memorial Park is an 11 acre riverside garden established in the region to honor King Rama II, known as the ‘poet king’. The site is believed to be his royal birthplace and features a traditional Thai-style teak mansion. Page: 1 2
