Overview

Phattalung is a small, prosperous province and one of the South of Thailand's main rice growing areas. The provincial capital has a large Chinese population as is made evident by the large amount of gold shops in the town. Phattalung is also famous as the home of the original shadow plays, known locally as nang thalung, and they can often be seen performed at temple fairs.

Attractions

A landmark of Phattalung is Tham Khuha Sawan, a massive limestone outcrop with a large hole through it. Several Buddha images have been enshrined next to the opening.

Tam Malai is a large cave three kilometres outside of the town centre and features a Chinese shrine. The climb up to the cave provides excellent views of Phattalung and the surrounding area. The cave itself can be explored if you have a torch.

Lam Pam is an expanse of inland sea and a popular spot for locals and visitor alike to relax. The area has deck chairs and tables set underneath shady trees and many vendors offering fresh seafood and drinks.Wat Wang is considered one of the most important temples in Phattalung. It was built during the reign of King Rama III and features some very fine murals depicting the story of Buddha's life.

Namtok Khao Khram is a waterfall 30 kilometres from the town. Set among verdant forest the waterfall is especially beautiful during the rainy season.
