Thailand Guides - Pattani![]() The former Portuguese trading post of Pattani is an interesting coastal town in one of Thailand's southern-most provinces. With a predominately Thai-Muslim population the area has a unique character and fee and some wonderful deserted beaches. OverviewPattani sits on the eastern coast of Thailand between the provinces of Yala and Narathiwat. The town is over 1,000 kilometres from Bangkok and during the 15th century acted as a Portuguese trading post and was at one time also an important centre for early Chinese traders. Despite this Pattani has a very distinct Muslim flavour with its own regional food, language and music. AttractionsPattani Central Mosque is the largest and most beautiful in Thailand. It was constructed during the administration of Field Marshal Sarit Dhanarath, inaugurated on May 3, 1963 and is situated just outside the town centre. Kru Se Mosque is the oldest mosque in Pattani and construction was started in 1578 by a Chinese immigrant who married a local woman and converted to Islam. Legend has it that the mosque was never completed because of the curse placed on it by Chao Mae Lim Kor Nieo. The semi-ruined Arab-style brick building stands in well-kept grounds. Wat Chiang Hai is a 300-year-old Buddhist temple renowned for its beauty and the sacred tablets housed here. A training centre at the temple teaches local people craft skills, such as Batik and basketry. Visitors are welcome at the centre. Page: 1 2
