Thailand Guides - Mukdahan

Mukdahan is a quiet province bordering the mighty Mekong River. Established by Laos migrants during the Ayutthaya period, this rural area of the northeast has some beautiful scenery and an interesting mix of cultures and traditions.

Overview

Mukdahan sits 170 kilometres north of Ubon Ratchathani and just across the Mekong River from the Laos town of Savannakhet. At present the crossing to Laos is made by a regular ferry but a bridge is being built which will surely change the fortunes of this small trading town and establish it as a new gateway to Laos and Vietnam. The scenery along the banks of the Mekong throughout Mukdahan province is particularly pretty.

Attractions

Ho Kaeo Mukdahan Tower is a 65 metre tall building two kilometres from the town centre. The building houses an exhibition on Mukdahan’s history, arts and culture. It also documents life along the Mekong River, past and present. The upper level of the tower forms an observation deck, an excellent location to enjoy panoramic views of the town, the Mekong River and the Laos town of Savannakhet.

Mukdahan National Park lies 17 kilometres from the town centre and is made up of hilly terrain and hardwood forest. The most striking area of the park is Phu Pha Thoep, an area littered with peculiar shaped rocks. Phu Tham Phra is the largest mountain in the park and the site of a waterfall and cave full of small wooden Buddha images.

Amphur Wan Yai is home to Wat Ban Song Khon Church, one of the largest and most beautiful Catholic churches in Asia.
