Thailand Guides - Mae Hong Son

The far northern town of Mae Hong Son, once an isolated hamlet is now a vibrant town connected by an excellent road and regular flights. This beautiful and mountainous region now attracts visitors eager to see its natural beauty and experience adventure amongst the rugged terrain.

Overview

The provincial capital of Mae Hong Son is a scenic and vibrant town and a centre for tourists seeking adventure in the surrounding mountains. The townspeople are predominately Shan, also referred to as Thai Yai, and local temple architecture shows the strong influence they have exerted over the region in the past. Hill tribe people scattered throughout the mountains and frequently seen in the towns markets, include Karen, Lisu, Lahu and Musoe. Mae Hong Son is one of the country’s premier destinations for trekking and soft adventure.

Attractions

Many of the temples in Mae Hon Song reflect the strong Burmese influence. Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, perched upon a hilltop and overlooking the town, is a fine example and has two lavishly decorated chedis.

Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang next to the scenic lake in the town centre are both interesting examples of Burmese-style temples. Wat Jong Klang was established over 200 years ago by the Shan.

Various ethnic groups are scattered throughout the province but the long-necked women of the Padaung tribe from Myanmar probably receive the most attention due their extended necks bound with brass rings. The villages were they live however, have become little more than a human zoo with bus-loads of tourists ferried in to pay and stare at them and the whole spectacle is best avoided.
