Thailand Guides - Lopburi![]() The ancient town of Lopburi was once an important part of the Khmer kingdom. Scattered with impressive temple ruins, the region is a ‘must see’ for anyone interested in old Khmer and Thai culture. OverviewDuring the rule of the Khmers in the 10th century Lopburi, or Lawo as it was then known, was an outpost of the Angkor Empire. Present-day Lopburi, which lies to the east of the original site, was established in the 1940’s. The main attraction is not the new town but the outstanding archaeological remains in the area. The town is also equally famous for being overrun by macaque monkeys. AttractionsPhra Prang Sam Yot is perhaps Lopburi’s best known landmark. This former Hindu shrines constructed of laterite blocks and sandstone is 200 metres from the railway station. Three towers signify the Hindu trinity of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer. The shrine was converted to be a Buddhist temple during the reign of King Narai. In the centre of town is Narai Ratchaniwet Palace, built by King Narai in 1665. It took 12 years to complete and today the entire compound serves as the Lop Buri National Museum. Several interesting buildings are contained within the compound. Phiman Mongut Pavilion, for example, is a three-storey brick building and former residence of King Rama IV. Chao Phraya Wichayen is a Thai-European palace built as a residence for visiting dignitaries by King Narai. The palace is close to Wat Sao Thong and is open to the public. Standing at the entrance to the town is the statue of King Narai the Great. The King was the first Thai monarch to establish diplomatic links with France. Page: 1 2
