Thailand Guides - Kamphaeng Phet![]() This small northern province and its ancient capital receive few visitors but make a fascinating addition to any tour of the lower-north of Thailand. OverviewKamphaeng Phet is steeped in history. In days gone by the town acted as an important frontline of defence for the nearby kingdom of Sukhothai. Evidence of the town’s former glory abounds and the area is scattered with ruins and archaeological sites. The Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park has been established by the Fine Arts Department on the site of the old city. The town is also home to an excellent museum and several outstanding temples. Kamphaeng Phet makes a good stopping-off point either going to or returning from Sukhothai. AttractionsKamphaeng Phet Historical Park is located within the old town. The ruins are divided into two areas and many of these important archeological sites are currently being restored by the Fine Arts Department. At the centre of the park there is a sand stone temple and a Sri Lankan-style chedi. The park is open to the public daily. Kamphaeng Phet National Museum, situated behind Wat Phra Kaeo, houses an impressive collection of artifacts unearthed from excavations conducted in the area, as well as items from other regions. Included in the collection are decorative terracotta’s from old temples and Sukhothai period Buddha images. Muang Nakhom Chum is an ancient town situated beside the Ping River. An old earthen defensive city wall running parallel to the river is still visible and several ancient temples are to be found within its boundary. Page: 1 2
