Thailand Guides - Kalasin![]() Kalasin and its provincial capital sit at the heart of the northeast. It is known for its traditional music and for being the site of the biggest concentration of dinosaur fossils ever discovered in Thailand. OverviewThe rural northeastern province of Kalasin is just over 500 kilometres from Bangkok. The area is famous for Pong Lang music and is also rich in ancient local and prehistoric sites. Local Phrae Wa silk made in a village in Kalasin is of a very high quality. AttractionsFa Daet Song Yang is an ancient city 20 kilometres outside the town of Kalasin. Although there is evidence of a prehistoric settlement in the area the city is known to have flourished during the 13th – 15th centuries. Ruins of town boundaries, temples and two moats are still visible today. Several artifacts discovered at the site are also housed in the Khon Kaen National Museum and include important temple marker stones, amulets and clay and bronze tobacco pipes. Phu Kum Khao displays the largest collection of dinosaur fossils found in Thailand. The Department of Mineral Resources excavated large areas and whole skeletons are now visible including Sauropods, large long-necked plant eaters thought to have lived over 130 million years ago. Ban Phon village is famous for the production of high quality of Phrae Wa silk. The silk is woven and dyed in the Mudmee style and displays particularly fine craftsmanship. The weavers are Phu Thai, descendents of villagers who originally migrated from Thaeng in Vietnam. Page: 1 2
